Earth is drying up

Our job is to reverse it, and there’s one decade to do it. We know it is necessary to keep the global temperature increase below 2°C, to stop irreversible damage to the planet that sustains us. We need to act together and we need to act fast.

Applying nature-based solutions to restore vegetation is the key to bringing down rising global temperatures. Plants and trees are the air conditioning of our planet: they remove carbon from the air and cool the surrounding area. Also, regreening and restoring degraded land positively impacts water and food security, biodiversity and creates a better life for millions of people and animals. How Justdiggit achieves this? By digging water bunds!

Dig it!

Water bunds are semi-circular-shaped pits that capture rainwater. We like to call them earth smiles 🙂

The water bunds are dug by Justdiggit in Sub-Saharan Africa to capture rainwater that will otherwise get washed away over the dry, barren soil. It works like this: together with local communities, the water bunds are dug on slopes, with the ‘closed’ side of the earth smile facing downhill. This way they can capture the water running downhill. The water bunds not only capture rainwater, but also make sure that the water running downhill in between bunds, will end up in another bund one ‘row’ further down, reaching a larger amount of bunds. Vegetation will now return, which slows down the water between the bunds even more, allowing it to infiltrate deeply in the soil.

Cool down the planet

By digging water bunds, we prevent soil erosion and improve the quality of the soil and water availability. This will help to cool down the earth and directly impacts the environment. The shadow and transpiration of vegetation cools down the soil, and offers natural sun shelter for various animals in the area. In other words: by digging water bunds, Justdiggit regreens large areas in a very short amount of time, benefitting biodiversity,  nature, people and – eventually our climate!

As of 2022, Justdiggit has dug a total of 315.000 bunds, which is equal to 3.75 billion liters of retained water. That is almost enough to give every person on earth 0.5 liters of water. Furthermore, they are regreening a total area of 400.000 ha – the size of about 530.000 football fields.

Our mission is to regreen African landscapes within the next decade, and our goal is to inspire and empower people all over the world to join us as we cannot do it alone. Dig in & spread the word!

About us

The journey of the 24 Cycling Club began as five friends from the Netherlands, all passionate about cycling, dreamed of pushing their limits while making a difference. Inspired by their love for cycling and a desire to combat climate change, they founded 24 Cycling Club. It is incredibly easy, but also physically challenging to become a member of the club: cycle as far as possible in 24 hours and raise money for a better and greener world.

Thanks for visiting our site and we hope you’ll support our mission.

Keep rolling!
